Here you will find all of the work we have done on our unit covering Strong and Stable Structures.  I will try to include a brief explanation of the lesson, as well as any worksheets we have used.
Materials and Structures
As we continue to talk about structures in our world, we see what makes a good structure.  We're seeing how to get a strong structure one needs durable and flexible material to build their structure.  We will continue  to explore over the week, material in various structures and why the choices of material are a good one for each of these items.

Monsters under bridges

Picture
From Portland, Oregon to Seattle, Washington to Vancouver, BC, this playful picture book introduces misunderstood monsters and the Pacific Northwest bridges they call home. Meet Irving the Noble Vegetarian who lives under the Astoria-Megler Bridge and smells like vegetables and hair gel. Or the Flixies, a group of winged pixie creatures who live under the Fremont Bridge in Portland. Each monster takes on the history and environment of their home, making Monsters Under Bridges engaging as well as educational. Find out who these lovable monsters are, how they spend their time, what they like to eat, and more in this fun monster almanac!

We will read this book and use it to help us learn about various types of bridges that exist in our world. Later next week we'll be using this theme to help us face some bridge making challenges in our classroom with some team building activity challenges!

Oldest structures

We have been talking about what makes a good structure and the question came up about what is the oldest structure in the world!
I've attached an interesting article talking about this very subject!

Christmas tree tower

We used our knowledge about structures to create a tree structure using plastic cups! Teams had to use teamwork and different strategies to create the tallest and most stable structure. We had so much fun!!
