Final project
The Career Project
Students develop goals, research, and form an oral presentation based on their desired career.
Objectives:
- To plan several goals to attain possible careers
- To integrate technology into a speech
- To research a possible career of interest
- Varies depending on student delivery
- Minimum pieces of technology such as: TV,camera, computer, ect. (websites, videos, powerpoint, slideshow)
- Optional: Outfits demonstrating the job's attire
Your final project will make you start thinking about your career plans. Now is the time you should be designing your education and career goals. You must be honest with yourself about where you are in relationship to achieving your career goals. This project is about organizing and planning the steps to achieving the career you are seeking. Please follow the guidelines carefully as you walk your way toward your future career.
Goals: This project requires you to develop a minimum of three goals. One goal for each of the categories listed below:
Short term Goal--This should be a goal you have for the next year (high school start and classes, volunteering)
Midrange Goal--This should be a goal of yours for the next four years (high school classes, university applications, volunteering, jobs).
Long-range Goal--This should be a goal that takes you into your career. This will be a goal that takes place within the next ten years.
I want you to list all three goals on some type of visual for your oral presentation. You will need to thoroughly explain why the goals are important to you.
Research: This project will be a 5-8 minute oral presentation. You need to research a career that you may wish to pursue. You may find research information on the Internet or in the library. Once you have researched your career you need to move to the planning stages. I want you to make the project as visual as possible. Your next step is to organize your short to midrange planning. Are there any remaining high school courses or activities you need to take or be involved with during your senior year to prepare for your career? These plans should bear in mind your short and midrange goals through high school graduation.
High School Graduation: This is a point where students are left with the question; "What am I going to do now?" There are many choices such as: university, the military, college, a trade school, a technical school, or right into a job. I want you to be specific about what steps you plan to take upon high school graduation. This might incorporate a midrange goal. No matter what you intend to do I want your ideas and plans. For example: you want to become a teacher, where would you go to volunteer or to do a part time job for experience . I would want to know where you would want to go to college and why. What is your major and what subjects do you want to teach? How are you going to get a job? Are you staying in school to get your Master's Degree? This may be one area you want to incorporate in a long-range goal.
Your "Career": Hypothetically pretend you have followed your plans and you have now achieved your dream job. Describe your job and what you are responsible for doing. Where do you work?
Oral Presentation: This is a 5-8 minute oral presentation. Be sure to follow directions on time minimums and maximums for your presentation. Presentation could include the following:
- (Optional) Dress up in attire that appropriately represents the career you are displaying. Be sure to tell why you are dressed that way. Do the best you can on this requirement. I will be lenient since much of the career apparel could be difficult to obtain. Be creative. If you can not dress up then draw a life size picture of a person dressed appropriately for your career.
- Create a montage of pictures and clippings that may be displayed during your oral presentation. Be sure the pictures describe your occupation and show people who are dressed as the occupation you are seeking.
Project Due Date: Thursday March 21st 2019
We will randomly arrange a list of days and dates for when you will be presenting your project.
FUTURE TENSE HELPER:
Simple Future The simple future tense (le futur simple) is the basic form of the future, and the English equivalent of “will + verb.” Here’s an example of how the simple future tense is used:
Ils mangeront dans l’avion. (They will eat on the plane.)
Note that in French, there is no translation for the often-used “will” in English. The future tense is one entity; more specifically, it is made of the entire verb plus an ending, depending on what subject is being used.
In the above case, ils refers to a group of people (“Il” meaning “he” and the extra “s” meaning “they,” referring to either a group of men or a group of men and women). Ils (and elles, which is used for groups of women) gets an ending of -ont at the end. For further explanation about what endings go with what subject, see the conjugation section below.
How to ConjugateHere’s how to conjugate both tenses using the verb parler (to speak). One of my favorite tools for looking up irregular conjugations is Word Reference, as well as my book of “501 French Verbs”.
The below guidelines are for regular conjugations, so use the aforementioned tools for complete conjugating rules.
How to Conjugate the Simple Future Tense in FrenchUse the entire verb as the stem, adding “-ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont” at the end.
Je parlerai
Tu parleras
Il/Elle parlera
Nous parlerons
Vous parlerez
Ils/Elles parleront
Other verbs that are conjugated like parler are regular –ir verbs, like finir (to finish).
Regular -re verbs also follow a pattern: simply remove the “e” from the ending of the infinitive and add your future endings. For example: for descendre (to descend, to go down), add the future endings to the stem descendr-, (je descendrai, etc.)
The Near Future Tense: Using “Aller” to Express the FutureThe near future tense (le futur proche) is used to express something that will be happening in the very near future, and is formed by conjugating the verb aller (to go) into the present tense and pairing it with the infinitive verb.
Formation of Near Future Tense: present tense of aller + infinitive (main verb)
Here’s a sample sentence in the near future tense:
Je vais nager. (I am going to swim.)
See here that aller is conjugated in the present while nager stays in its infinitive form, unconjugated. You would say this if you were going swimming in the near future.
If you were going to swim sometime further in the future, your sentence would look more like this:
Je nagerai. (I will swim.)
This implies that you will swim sometime in the future. You can, of course, add words to be more specific, like la semaine prochaine (next week), demain (tomorrow) or l’été prochain (next summer).
